Update: Accused Atwell College teacher reportedly placed on leave

An Atwell College teacher facing an indecent assault charge has reportedly been placed on leave after WA in Focus raised questions about why he had been permitted to continue working while facing criminal proceedings.

WA in Focus first reported the matter on 9 August 2026, revealing that the teacher was understood to have continued working at the school despite facing an indecent assault charge involving an adult woman.

Two months of questions & still no answers

Since publishing our original report, WA in Focus has repeatedly sought responses from representatives including written enquiries to:

  • Atwell College.
  • Education Minister Sabine Winton and Liam Staltari.
  • Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA).

As of 18 October 2026, WA in Focus has still not received a response to any of these enquiries.

TRBWA still shows a Full Registration

The TRBWA is responsible for regulating teacher registration in Western Australia, including matters relating to professional conduct and fitness to teach.

Its regulatory responsibilities are separate from the Department of Education's responsibilities as an employer.

As of 18 October 2026, WA in Focus's review of the TRBWA public register showed the teacher continued to hold a Full Registration.

Criminal proceedings continue

The teacher has pleaded not guilty and is due to appear at Armadale Magistrates Court in December 2026 for a trial allocation hearing.
