Fights & safety concerns forced Kelmscott Show gates shut yesterday

The Kelmscott Show shut its gates to incoming visitors late on Saturday after a group of about 50 to 70 young people allegedly caused disruption inside and outside the grounds, prompting organisers to call police.

The Kelmscott Agricultural Society said several fights broke out after some members of the group entered the show, while others outside repeatedly tried to force their way in, damaging show infrastructure.

Organisers said members of the group also blocked nearby roads, creating a dangerous situation for motorists and pedestrians.

The disruption occurred during the final afternoon of the two day event at Rushton Park Showgrounds, on the corner of River Road and Orlando Street. The show was scheduled to run from 9am to 7pm on Saturday, 17 October 2026, following its successful Friday evening opening.

Safety concerns

The society said the decision to stop further entry was made to protect visitors, exhibitors and volunteers.

“This is the first time in our recent history that we have had to do this,” the society said. “The decision was not made lightly.”

“The safety of our visitors, exhibitors, volunteers and community always comes first, and we’re truly sorry to anyone who was turned away.”

The closure affected entry to the grounds, with organisers saying security staff worked to keep the show operating for those already inside.

Some returned after police arrived

According to the society, most of the group left when police arrived. However, some remained nearby and repeatedly returned, creating an ongoing safety concern.

“With this ongoing risk, and so late in the day, we decided it wasn’t safe to reopen,” the society said.

Organisers did not specify the exact time the gates closed or identify which nearby roads were blocked.

Praise for security team

The society praised its security team for managing the disruption under stressful conditions.

“They kept visitors, exhibitors and volunteers safe and did their best to keep the Show running for those already inside, all under very stressful conditions,” it said.

The society also thanked WA Police for responding.

Whether anyone was arrested or charged is unknown.

Society disappointed

Organisers expressed disappointment that the disruption had affected an event supported by volunteers, exhibitors and local families.

“We’re disappointed that the actions of a few affected a day that so many people, from volunteers to exhibitors to families, had been looking forward to,” the society said.

“Thank you for your understanding and continued support of the Kelmscott Show.”
